Together

I’m thinking that the government needs to do more singing. If they started each meeting with a song, it would help. This ritualised sing would have so many benefits.

1. It would bring them together as a group. Singing together increases co-operation.
2. It would help them to listen. When people sing together a lot they naturally want to make it sound better. The only way to do this is to listen to each other. You don’t have to tell people to do it - it just happens.
3. It would improve their breathing - lots of them will already have damaged lungs because of the virus (The Prime Minister certainly sounds more breathless than he did and push ups aren’t going to fix that)
4. It would be calming. I have noticed how angry they get. Singing helps you calm down.
5. They might appreciate the value of music (I know, get me, with my wild hopefulness!)
6. It would be a way of testing how dangerous singing is in a small enclosed space.
7. They could learn a lot from song lyrics. Most of what I know is from songs.
8. It would improve their posture. Have you seen how they slouch?
9. It would make them better people.
10. It would be fun. They look like they could use some fun.

It could be quite fun to put together a song list for Parliament. However, I’d like them to start with songs on the theme of togetherness. There are plenty to choose from. They could go for the primary school classic by Out of the Ark, which would remind them, We are here together, together, together, we are here together, Everyone. Alternatively, there’s We’re all in this together, from High School Musical. They could look to the genius of Sondheim and sing, “Wherever we go whatever we do, we’re gonna go through this together. Through thick or through thin. We're all out or all in....”
There are plenty to choose from. I’ve checked and I can’t find a single song with the lyrics that say we’re in this together ‘cept Leicester, ‘cause people in Leicester don’t matter yeah.  I don’t know why? It’s quite catchy.
There is always Altogether Now, from the Beetles, which makes about as much sense.
Bom bom bom bompa bom
Sail the ship, bompa bom
Chop the tree, bompa bom
Skip the rope, bompa bom
Look at me

All together now
